The M249 is a fully automatic, magazine-fed, 5.56mm light machine gun. It fires up to 100 5.56×45mm cartridges from the 5.56 Box magazine.
The weapon features a full-length barrel, with a carry handle and a heat-shielded handguard, and a fixed polymer buttstock.
The weapon model also features a top cover integrated mounting rail, and a folded bipod stowed underneath the forearm, although these appear to be purely cosmetic, and unusable.

The M249's magazine capacity, rate of fire, and damage make give it a very high Damage Per Second (DPS) rating. Its immense firepower makes it effective against players, mutants, and even vehicles. Its ability to lay down suppressive fire makes it especially valuable in firefights.
Although powerful, M249 does come with several drawbacks. Weighing 9.5kg, the M249 is a heavy weapon. While wielded, it slows down player movement. Due to the weapon's recoil, sustained automatic fire may make muzzle climb difficult to control, consequently rendering the weapon inaccurate at longer ranges.
